1907年，政府開辦香港實業專科學院，負責培訓在職的非合格教師，畢業證書為文憑級。學院首設在職英文師資班，其後於1914年增設漢文師資班，二者皆為夜間兼讀課程，故又稱夜師。學院開設男、女師訓班，分別設於皇仁書院和庇理羅士女子中學內。學院於1935年改稱香港專科夜學院，直至1950年才告停辦。
In 1907, the government established the Hong Kong Technical Institute to train in-service unqualified teachers, awarding them diploma-level certificates upon graduation. The Institute offered the first in-service English Teacher’s Class, followed by the Vernacular Teacher’s Class in 1914. The two classes were both part-time evening courses. The Institute offered both teacher’s classes for men and women at Queen’s College and Belilios Public School. The Institute was later renamed Hong Kong Evening Institute, until it was closed in 1950.
